Russia plans to create a repository for storing software similar to GitHub, which can be freely used by everyone. This follows from a draft decree published on the Regulation.gov.ru portal, RBC writes.

The government intends to conduct an experiment in providing under an open license of computer programs, the rights to which belong to Russia, from May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2024. As part of it, a repository will be created for the free publication and storage of software source codes and additional data. Access to it should be available to individuals and legal entities “without restrictions on national, territorial and other grounds”.

Sergei Sergienko, advisor to the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, noted that the repository should become the Russian analog of GitHub, the world’s largest web service for collaborative development and hosting of IT projects.

The national repository will host software created on budget funds. Among the participants of the experiment are Mincifry, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Rosreestr, Pension Fund and other state bodies and organizations on a voluntary basis. The final list is to be formed by June 1.
