Bulgarian Prime Minister Kirill Petkov and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris have agreed that Bulgaria will start supplying natural gas from the United States “at prices below Gazprom” as early as June, the Bulgarian government said in a statement. The price at which Bulgaria will buy energy resources from the United States was not disclosed.

“Vice President Kamala Harris congratulated Bulgaria for taking decisive action to protect its energy sovereignty. For his part, Prime Minister Petkov noted that the partnership between Sofia and Washington is an important part of achieving Bulgaria’s gas independence, along with solidarity with the EU,” the republic’s government said in a statement.

Bulgaria announced in early April that it would continue to pay for Russian gas in euros. This was in response to a law signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 1 that converts payments for unfriendly countries into rubles. Since April 27, “Gazprom” stopped supplies to Bulgaria because it had not received payment in rubles.
