The Polish government has terminated the agreement on gas supplies from Russia ahead of schedule, Kommersant reports. The country had planned to finally give up gas supplies at the end of the year. Under the agreement, which runs until 2022, Poland could receive up to 10 million cubic meters of gas annually from Russia.

The decision was announced by the representative of the Polish government on strategic energy infrastructure Piotr Naimski. He specified that the Polish government adopted a resolution to break the agreement with the Russian government signed in 1993 back on May 13.

“After 30 years, we can state that relations in the gas sector between Poland and Russia cease to exist,” Naimski said on Polish Radio.

He added that the Polish section of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline, which used to transport gas from Russia, could be used for deliveries from Germany. The section would also be used to transport gas to Poland itself.

“This section of the gas transmission infrastructure is the property of EuroPolGaz. The operator of this section, as well as of the entire gas transmission system in Poland, is GAZ-Sistem,” Piotr Naimski said.
