Chinese Internet giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. plans to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030. In addition, Alibaba aims to cut its supply chain emissions in half by the same time, Chief Executive Officer Daniel Zhang said.

Among the steps Alibaba plans to take to implement its plan are increased use of renewable energy in data centers, as well as services from logistics operators using electric vehicles. Alibaba Cloud service plans that by 2030, 100% of the energy used by the company will be “clean”.

In addition, the online retailer will help reduce the emissions of sellers and buyers using the company’s platform, aiming to reduce emissions by 1.5 gigatonnes by 2035. Specifically, Alibaba plans to launch initiatives that will encourage or incentivize eco-friendly behavior.

“We will use our unique influence as a platform operator to mobilize action and behavioral change among consumers, merchants and our partners in China and around the world,” Zhang said.

The company will have a new body to oversee its ESG practices, and a sustainability committee on Alibaba’s board will be chaired by independent director Jerry Yang, who co-founded Yahoo Inc.
