A total of 790 people died of coronavirus infection in Russia over the past 24 hours, the highest number since January 8, the federal operational headquarters said. Deaths from COVID-19 have been rising in Russia for the third day in a row and have increased by more than a hundred per day in that time.

On January 15, it became known that the disease claimed the lives of 704 people (+3.1% to the previous day), on January 16 – the deaths of 748 people (+6.3%), January 17 – the number of deaths increased by another 5.6%.

The most deaths from COVID-19 on the previous day were traditionally recorded in Moscow (85) and St. Petersburg (74). Nizhny Novgorod Region (37) and Moscow Region (31) were also among the leaders in this indicator.

A total of 180,622 new cases of COVID-19 infection were detected in Russia over the past day, which is almost the same number as the day before (179,284). St. Petersburg (16,595) and Moscow (9,705) were the leaders in the number of infections.
