U.S. online retailer Amazon.com Inc. is winding down some of its operations in India, including the company will stop delivering food, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.

That indicates that even Amazon’s critical growing Indian market of 1.4 billion consumers is not immune to Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy’s cost-cutting campaign, the agency said.

Several projects under testing are also likely to be postponed, the source said. The company announced that its Amazon Academy learning platform, which offers online exam preparation resources for students seeking admission to medical and engineering schools in India, will be shut down in the coming months.

The winding down of part of Amazon’s business in India will entail laying off just a few hundred employees. In total, more than 100,000 people work in the country, and Amazon has about 1.54 million employees worldwide.

Amazon share prices are declining today in pre-market trading. The market value of the retailer since the beginning of this year fell by almost 44% (to $953 billion), while the stock index Nasdaq Composite lost 28.2%.
