The United States would impose sweeping sanctions against top Russian military and government officials, including President Vladimir Putin, as well as key banking institutions if Moscow displays military aggression against Ukraine, according to a new bill to be introduced Wednesday by Democratic senators, the Washington Post reported.

The bill also includes provisions to help Ukraine strengthen the country’s security and incentives to “consider all available and appropriate measures” to ensure that the Nord Stream-2 pipeline – “an instrument of Russian Federation’s malign influence” – does not go ahead, the report said.

The bill would also target companies in Russia that offer access to secure data exchange systems such as SWIFT, which banks use to exchange key information with other financial institutions, the Washington Post said. The bill was authored by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez. Nearly two dozen Democratic senators, including Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have already endorsed Menendez’s bill, according to the Washington Post.
