Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is projecting Europe’s gas price to rise to 2,000 euros per thousand cubic meters following Germany’s announcement to freeze certification of the new Nord Stream-2 pipeline.

“German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has ordered a halt to the certification of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline. Well. Welcome to the new world, where Europeans will soon be paying 2,000 euros per thousand cubic meters of gas!”,” Medvedev wrote on his Twitter page.

Scholz said Tuesday that he had frozen the certification of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline following Moscow’s decision to recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics in eastern Ukraine.

“We have to review the situation, in particular with regard to Nord Stream 2,” Scholz said at a press conference with his Irish counterpart, adding that the German economy ministry would review the certification process again, taking into account Russia’s actions.

The project operator, Nord Stream 2, declined to comment on Scholz’s remarks, saying it was awaiting proper information from regulators.

Germany does not accept Russia’s recognition of the DNR and LNR, Scholz said.
