“Gazprom” stopped supplying gas to the Netherlands because of the country’s refusal to pay in rubles, according to the company’s message in Telegram. Russian President Vladimir Putin had earlier instructed to transfer payment for gas in rubles from April 1.

“Gazprom has completely stopped gas supplies to GasTerra B.V. (Netherlands) due to non-payment in rubles,” the company announced, specifying that Gazprom Export had still not received payment by the end of the working day on May 30.

Under the new gas payment scheme, which has been in effect since April, foreign buyers from the list of unfriendly countries (the Russian government considers all EU countries, the U.S., Britain and a number of other states to be such) must open two accounts in Gazprombank – a foreign currency account and a ruble account.

The bank must independently convert funds received on the foreign currency account into rubles on the Moscow Exchange and then credit rubles to the second account.
