X5 Retail Group (X5 Group) in the 4th quarter of 2022 increased its total sales by 16.3% compared to the same period of 2021, up to 704 billion rubles, according to the report.

In particular, the revenue of the chain of stores “at home” “Pyaterochka” increased by 13.5% (to 551.9 billion rubles), supermarket chain “Perekrestok” – by 4.4% (to 98 billion rubles). The revenue of hypermarkets “Karusel” fell by 66.3%, to 2.35 billion rubles. The chain of “Hard” discounters “Chizhik” showed eightfold growth, revenue amounted to 15.2 billion rubles.

X5’s comparable sales (LfL) grew by 7.9% on the back of average check growth of 3.5% and traffic growth of 4.3%.

The retailer’s revenue increased by 18.3% to RUB 2 trillion 601 billion in 2022.

Pyaterochka’s revenue for the year increased by 18.3% to 2 trillion 123 billion rubles, Perekrestok – by 10.5% to 385.5 billion rubles. Karusel’s revenue decreased twofold, to Br15.7 billion. The revenue of discounters “Chizhik” increased 12 times, to 35.9 billion rubles from 2.9 billion rubles in 2021.

The retailer’s offline sales (revenue of four store chains excluding delivery) grew by 15.7% (to 681.9 billion rubles) in Q4 2022 and by 17.7% (to 2 trillion 531 billion rubles) over the year.

Sales of digital businesses (online hypermarket Vprok.ru Perekrestok, express delivery, last-mile delivery service 5Post and ready-to-eat food delivery service Plenty Salmon) increased by 35.8% (to RUB 22.1 billion) in the reporting period and by 46.6% (to RUB 70.35 billion) in 2022.

X5’s retail space grew by 8.3% to 9.107 million square meters as of December 31.

“In the new year, we will continue to actively expand our hard discounter and convenience store chains with a focus on more affordable prices, as well as consider opportunities to develop in new regions through strategic partnerships with local retailers,” X5 CEO Igor Shekhterman said in a statement.

In 2022 X5 opened 2.202 thousand stores (net, including closures), most of them were Pyaterochka stores (1.192 thousand at the end of the year). The multiple growth in store openings was demonstrated by Chizhik – 445 stores were opened during the year.

X5 also noted that food inflation in Q4 amounted to 11.2% (15.6% in Q3).

“The food market declined by 2.7% in real terms from April to November 2022. Migration outflow of population in early fall locally reduced demand for food. However, already in October demand began to recover,” the group said in a statement.

X5 is Russia’s largest retailer by revenue. At the end of 2022 the group united 21.323 thousand stores, including 19.164 thousand stores “at home” “Pyaterochka”, 971 supermarkets “Perekrestok”, 517 “hard” discounters “Chizhik” and 595 stores “Krasny Yar” and “Slata”.
