On 10 December, the Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank (WB) approved additional financing in the amount of $150m for the project “Emergency response to COVID-19 and vaccination in Ukraine”.

This is reported by the press service of the bank. The WB expects that $120 million of additional financing will help the government of Ukraine to purchase 16.5 million doses of vaccines, which should be enough to vaccinate about 20% of the population. This purchase will also allow 10 million people from priority population groups to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The remaining $30 million will fund other aspects of the company’s vaccination rollout: information technology, public communications, capacity building, and procurement of cold chain and waste management equipment.

“The new additional funding will help Ukraine further strengthen its COVID-19 response and accelerate vaccination. Vaccination rates in Ukraine are still among the lowest in Europe. This is why the loss of human life as well as economic losses are so high, especially with the emergence of new variants of the virus,” said Arup Banerjee, World Bank Regional Director for Eastern Europe.
