There are no objective reasons for Russia’s default in the current situation, Russia is ready to pay its obligations, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters today.

“There can be no objective reasons for default. There is money, there is readiness to pay them – whether in rubles, or whether under a scheme that may be more convenient for the holders of securities,” Peskov said.

This is how he responded to a request to express his opinion on whether Western holders of Eurobonds will agree to a new payment scheme similar to the gas payment system established by Russia, or will prefer to default on the expiration of the grace period.

Peskov said that the Russian Finance Ministry would be making contacts on the issue.

“Everything will depend on these contacts,” Peskov said.
