WhatsApp has been experiencing its first large-scale global disruption since last year for several hours.

Users of the messenger WhatsApp (owned by Meta, whose activities were recognized as extremist and banned in Russia) reported a failure in its work, according to the data of the service for tracking the work of Internet resources Downdetector.

By 10:30 Moscow time on October 25, the number of reports of problems with the service in different countries has increased dramatically. For example, there were over 183,000 reports from Germany, over 60,000 from the UK, almost 29,000 from India, about 9,000 from Indonesia, almost 8,000 from France, and about 3,500 from the US.

Russian users complain about malfunctions when sending messages, for example, two tick marks do not appear when they are delivered and they do not turn blue when the recipient reads the message. The problems are observed both in the mobile application and the web version. There are also problems directly connecting to the service.

Meta told Reuters that it is aware of the problem and is working on restoring the messenger.
