Global sales of electric vehicles increased significantly in 2022 due to the upswing in demand in China and Europe. Their share in total annual vehicle sales approached 10%, according to data from analyst companies LMC Automotive and EV-Volumes.com.

Sales of all-electric vehicles jumped 68% year-on-year to 7.8 million units, according to the data.

In Europe, electric vehicles accounted for 11% of total sales, and 19% in China. Electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for a total of 20.3% of car sales in the European market in 2022.

As reported by the Association of the German Automotive Industry (VDA), cars with electric motors accounted for 25% of all car production in Germany last year. In December, their sales in Germany exceeded the sales of cars with internal combustion engines.

Overall, global car sales fell 1% last year to 80.6 million units, LMC data show. They were down 8% in the US and 7% in Europe, and up 4% in China.

German carmaker Volkswagen said last week that its sales last year fell 7% to 8.3 million vehicles. At the same time, sales of electric cars jumped 26% to 572,100 units.
